Video
This page serves to discuss videos of Wikimania 2018, i.e. video recordings or online streams of the programme.
What do we want and why?
There should be as many videos of programme elements as possible, for two reasons:
- People who cannot attend Wikimania (for any reason) will be able share in the knowledge and experiences presented and discussed at Wikimania.
- People who consider not attending (for any reason) will have the possibility to choose remote attendance instead.
Both reasons have the potential to help Wikimania have more impact, and be more sustainable. After all, attending Wikimania is only possible for a minute group within our movement.
At Wikimania 2016, nearly every session was recorded. This was not the case at Wikimania 2017, where only the main track is available on video.
What do we need?
Video streaming requirements
The following equipment and know-how is needed to produce a live stream with decent production value:
Equipment
- A laptop powerful enough to stream a video with a bitrate of at least 2500 kbps (720p minimum bitrate) running OBS (Open Broadcast Software)
- Video camera with an HDMI output and an audio input
- Camera tripod
- USB video capture card (inputs HDMI video from camera and delivers it to the streaming laptop via USB)
- Hardwired internet connection that is at least 10mbps upload/download
- USB audio interface (inputs audio from mixer and delivers it to the streaming laptop via USB)
- Output from the room audio mixer to the USB audio interface (an auxiliary bus of all the mics in the room)
- Headphones to monitor the audio
- Gaffers tape
- HDMI cable, video adapters, ethernet adapters, XLR cable, XLR cable adapters
- If a slide deck is part of the presentation
- First option:
- We need the slide deck before the presentation
- A second laptop to host the slide deck
- A second USB video capture card to send the slide deck to the streaming laptop
- The person operating the stream needs to advance the slide deck along with the presenter
- Or the second option (preferable, if possible):
- A second USB video capture card to send the slide deck to the streaming laptop
- A 1 to 2 HDMI splitter in between the projector and the laptop hosting the slide deck
- An HDMI cable to run from the second output of the splitter to the USB video capture card
- First option:
Know how
- Ability to use a tripod to pan/tilt/zoom a camera
- Setting and striking AV equipment rigs (knowing how to properly wrap cable is a huge plus)
- Having a basic grasp of the equipment and what each hardware piece does so that basic troubleshooting can occur if problems arise
Video recording requirements
Recording a presentation requires less equipment than streaming a presentation, but can require a bit of post production work, especially if a slide deck is present.
Equipment
- Video camera with an audio input
- Camera tripod
- Output from the room audio mixer to the camera (an auxiliary bus of all the mics in the room)
- Headphones to monitor the audio
- HDMI cable, video adapters, XLR cable, XLR cable adapters
- Gaffers tape
- The slide deck (if there is one) so that it can be edited in to the recording in post production
Know-how
- Ability to use a tripod to pan/tilt/zoom a camera
- Setting and striking AV equipment rigs
- Having a basic grasp of the equipment and what each hardware piece does so that basic troubleshooting can occur if problems arise
People
We need
- videographers and
- coordinators.
Plans
The Wikimedia Foundation Office IT will streaming selected sessions.

Who wants to help?
First team meeting on Wednesday, June 27 some time between 1800 and 2200 GMT+2. Please get in touch via this Telegram to join: https://t.me/joinchat/IQR8rA5UHulCfZviHvJ2xA
- Gnom - I'm really interested in ensuring that as many sessions as possible are recorded. However, I have no idea about how to do it.
- ZA Wikimania committee formed a video team. We have started getting quotes and coordinating things, and comparing with learnings from Debian videoteam. Can we schedule a call ASAP? Ping me on telegram. Need to know what gear you have and what WMF server resources are available, we think we can livestream and record everything. And document process and setup for future events and other movements. Dagelf (talk) 19:12, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
