Abstract
With 2018 being the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH), Wikimedia Deutschland is participating in this European-wide project in cooperation with the German National Committee for Monument Protection and with great support from the international Wiki Loves Monuments team. The project “Wiki Loves Monuments goes EYCH 2018” is partly funded by the German Government (Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media).
Alongside capacity-building workshops for the local GLAM, photo, and Young Wikipedians community, Wikimedia Deutschland will conceptualize and realise a special photo contest with a focus on European Cultural Heritage together with and for the global community. By allowing international-wide submissions and inviting everyone to deal with European culture, the project is supposed to help foster a better understanding on European culture across borders. For the first time, people will be invited to participate in a creative way. Together, we want to establish an awareness that there are various ways to contribute to Wikimedia projects and free knowledge.
In this presentation we want to show you briefly the activities in the project and present you some ideas how we involve the local and global communities and reach out to the general public and cultural institutions. Our main goal is to strengthen the global community with new editors and work towards a better understanding among WLM volunteers about their cultural history and monuments, at first with a focus on European heritage. We hope that this can inspire communities around the world from the Americas, via Asia and Oceania through to Africa and back and forth to initiate similar campaigns, backed up with the experiences from this project.
Outcomes
This presentation will give the audience an impression how to bring together various stakeholders from cultural institutions via Wikimedia organizations through to WLM community activists in order to strengthen everyone. People will become aware that there are various ways to contribute to Wikimedia projects and free knowledge, e.g. by participating to the Wikimedia projects in a creative way. We hope that this can inspire communities around the world to start similar initiatives, backed up by the experiences we like to share.
Naturally, we also want to use this session to gain insights from the rich experiences of the movement in terms of bringing volunteers around the globe together for one specific project aspect.
