Sometimes, it seems like everyone in the world knows about Wikipedia. But that's not the case. According to recent phone surveys, just 11% of people in Iraq have heard of Wikipedia. In Nigeria, it's 23%. Lack of name recognition challenges the Wikimedia movement's ability to invite new readers, contributors, and advocates to join our communities. If you don't know about Wikipedia, how can you use it and contribute to it?
We will talk about the impact of these campaigns with volunteers from each of these countries. We will showcase the Hindi video campaign that we produced in India.
The Foundation also launched an Inspire campaign which ended with 424 ideas and now we are going to fund upto 20 rapid grant proposals in March 2018 which are aimed at increasing awareness of Wikimedia projects. We will share about some of these proposals along with their impact.
Attendees will learn about the efforts being made by the WMF and communities around the world to raise awareness for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. They will also learn that they can themselves apply for grants to raise awareness for Wikipedia in their regions.
